Department of Environmental Quality
Environmental permits are only required for hazardous waste, septic tanks and sewer discharge of non-domestic source.

Hazardous waste permits 

City of Helena Planning 
For projects within the city limits
Lewis & Clark County Planning 
For projects in the unincorporated areas.
Fire Department
Other hazardous waste
The process time is approximately 30 days.

Sewer and air quality permits 

City and County Health Department.
City of Helena Public Works Department - Sewer
Lewis & Clark County Health Department  - Water

Other Permit Issues

Timing is tied directly to the project size or complexity of the project.

Zone Change:
City of Helena and Lewis & Clark County Planning
90 days with final determination with City Commission.

Existing Industrial, R&D, Office or Manufacturing Zoned Sites:
City of Helena Planning Department (within the city limits)
